Our mission is to train certified Physician Assistants to have the knowledge, procedural skills, and confidence to provide exceptional medical care to patients in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The residency is an intensive 12 month training program and takes 2-3 PAs per year. We have been preparing PAs for a career in Neonatology since 2005, and 100% of our graduates have been employed in a NICU upon completion of the program.

The didactic curriculum begins with a two week block of lectures given by NICU Attendings, NICU Advanced Practice Providers & Pediatric Sub-Specialty Attendings, to provide a solid foundation in neonatal physiology & pathophysiology.  Weekly educational opportunities throughout the year including: neonatal grand rounds, pediatric grand rounds, neonatal journal club, fetal-infant mortality conference, maternal-fetal medicine conference, and pathology conference.

The clinical portion of the residency consists of the following rotations:

    • NICU (9 months)
    • Pediatric surgery (2 weeks)
    • Pediatric radiology (2 weeks)
    • Pediatric cardiology (2 weeks)
    • Maternal-fetal medicine (2 weeks)
    • Newborn nursery (2 weeks)
    • Nursing rotation (1 week)

And the following procedural skills:

    • Endotracheal intubation
    • Lumbar puncture
    • Umbilical line placement
    • Chest tube placement
    • Thoracentesis
    • Ventricular reservoir tap
    • Peripheral arterial line placement
    • Neonatal resuscitation

The resident will also be required to take in-house night call, 5 days per month.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kentucky Children’s Hospital is a 70 bed, level IV facility that provides care to critically ill newborns from all across Central & Eastern Kentucky. With over 800 infants admitted each year for medical and/or surgical reasons, & approximately 100 of those infants weighing less than 1000 grams, the KCH NICU cares for all neonates from the simplest to the most complex. Services provided include conventional and high-frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and pre- and post-operative surgical care. KCH also has many pediatric sub-specialties available for consultation including: cardiology, pulmonology, infectious disease, hematology, neurology, pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, ENT, plastic surgery, gastroenterology, radiology, ophthalmology, nephrology & endocrinology.
