Program Description

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Regions Hospital is offering a post graduate program for Physician Assistants interested in advanced training in emergency medicine. The Physician Assistant Residency Program is in collaboration with the existing Physician EM Residency Program and the departments of Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Orthopedics, and Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at Regions Hospital and local outreach partners. Regions Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center for Ramsey County and is located in Saint Paul, Minnesota part of the metropolitan Twin Cities. The Emergency Department at Regions has 15,000 square feet, 54 treatment rooms, with approximately 75,000 patients seen annually. PA residents will train with experienced physician and PA staff alongside physician emergency medicine residents and students of various disciplines.

Program Mission

The mission of Regions Hospital Emergency Medicine PA Residency Program is to provide a post-graduate specialty training program for physician assistants that will promote excellence in emergency department patient care with a focus on critical care knowledge and procedures. PA residents will undergo intensive didactic and clinical training preparing them to be skilled partners in care delivery in emergency, acute care, and intensive care settings.

Curriculum Outline

Our PA residents will be required to study the core content curriculum that is required for emergency medicine physician board certification. PA residents will participate in weekly conferences with the EM physician residents. They will be required to certify in ACLS, PALS, ATLS and/or CALS. PA residents will be participating in skills workshops, including procedure labs and simulation labs. There is opportunity for additional training in Ultrasound, EMS, Toxicology, International Emergency Medicine, and research studies.

PA Residents will devote a significant portion of their training to emergency medicine. They will have required rotations in specialty areas essential for proficiency in emergency medicine. There will be rotations to outreach hospital partners and a rural emergency department.

Admission Process

Applicant Requirements:

  • Degree from an ARC-PA accredited PA Program prior to matriculation into the program
  • A Baccalaureate degree or higher
  • Eligible for National Certification by the NCCPA. New graduates may apply who are PANCE eligible
  • Minnesota and Wisconsin licensure or eligibility

Credentials Awarded

A Certificate of Completion will be awarded by the Health Partners Institute for Medical Education.

Financial Information

Physician Assistant residents will receive a salary of $50,049 annually and a total of $75,025 for the 18 months. A complete benefits package will be provided including medical/dental/life insurance, 401K, paid vacation, short/long term disability, and education funds.
