Program Description & History

Since its inception in 2009, the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Montefiore has trained over 15 critical care physician assistants. The program is currently accredited by the Association of Post Graduate Physician Assistant Programs and specializes in producing physician assistants capable of managing every type of critically ill patient. Our physician assistants go on to become employed in medical, surgical, neurosurgical, and cardiothoracic ICU’s throughout the country. Our balanced rotational curriculum exposes our residents to a wide variety of clinical settings, allowing them to obtain the broad skill set required of the modern critical care physician assistant.

Length of Program: 12 months

Number of Start Dates: 2 (December 1st/June 1st)

Class Size Per Cycle: 2 residents

Training is centered in the adult Critical Care Units of Einstein-Montefiore’s Moses and Weiler divisions. The Einstein Division of Critical Care Medicine and Montefiore Jay B. Langner Critical Care System Department of Critical Care Medicine, a multi-specialty clinical department, include the ICUs used to educate PA residents for more than 3 decades.

Our clinical rotations include cardiothoracic intensive care (featuring our esteemed mechanical circulatory support program including ECMO), neurosurgical intensive care (featuring our new state-of-the-art ICU), medical intensive care, surgical intensive care, as well as our renowned critical care consult service (triage and initial management of critically ill patients over the entire hospital network).
