Program Description and History

The UPMC Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Programs are dedicated to advancing UPMC as the premier educational setting for producing excellence in care of the patients through an innovative clinical curriculum specifically tailored to prepare the physician assistant and nurse practitioner to practice in an evolving and increasingly complex health care market. The UPMC Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Program Goal is to cultivate a mastery of fundamental knowledge and skill in a multi-disciplinary approach of teaching and supported mentorship to allow the advanced practice provider to grow and work to their full scope of practice and provide excellent patient care.


The didactic portion consists of an online and in person lecture series paired with hands on instruction. The didactic portion is followed by the advanced practice provider working as a staff clinician on various services based on which fellowship program enrolled in.

Admissions Process

Once complete application packet received is reviewed, if deemed an appropriate candidate a short online screening through UPMC HR is completed, then eligible for an interview. Once accepted, UPMC HR will contact prospective fellow and once offer accepted the credentialing process starts immediately.  **Acceptance to fellowship program is contingent upon successful completion of the UPMC credentialing process and a pre-employment health screening.

Selection Criteria

Eligible applicants will meet the following requirements:

  • Available for an in-person interview.

Physician Assistant

  • PANCE certification (if applicable).
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
  • A current state PA license, certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required prior to start date.

Nurse Practitioner

  • BSN; MSN candidate is preferred.
  • A current state RN license and CRNP certification is required prior to start date.

Credential Awarded

  • Certificate


  • Hired on as a staff employee with corresponding salary based on experience, full benefits, and PTO accrual.
