Program Description and History

The UPMC Advanced Practice Provider Surgical Residency Program is dedicated to advancing UPMC as the premier educational setting for producing excellence in care of the surgical patient through an innovative clinical curriculum specifically tailored to prepare the physician assistant and nurse practitioner to practice in an evolving and increasingly complex health care market. The UPMC Advanced Practice Provider Surgical Residency Program Goal is to cultivate a mastery of surgical fundamentals including assisting at surgery, bedside procedure performance, and principles of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative patient care across all surgical settings.

Curriculum

Residents begin with a 4 week formally structured didactic curriculum including laparoscopic training lab, cadaver lab, ATLS, suturing and knot tying, line insertion course and Fundamentals of Surgery Lecture Series given by top UPMC doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and certified registered nurse anesthetists. The didactic portion is followed by eight clinical, hands on, surgical rotations on the following services:  Trauma/Acute Care Surgery, Surgical ICU, Vascular, Cardiac, Thoracic, Plastics, Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Orthopaedics.

Admissions Process

Once complete application packet received is reviewed, if deemed an appropriate candidate a short online screening through UPMC HR is completed, then eligible for an interview. After all interviews completed the panel consisting of: Director of UPMC Office of Advanced Practice Providers, Program Director, Medical, Director, Educational Director, and Department of Surgery Division Administrator will select  whom to make offers, and then UPMC HR will contact prospective residents. Once offer accepted the credentialing process starts immediately.

Application Components

  1. Submit by email to program director: halleral@upmc.edu. Curriculum Vitae, letter of interest, and 3 letters of recommendation (one must be from program director or clinical coordinator.
  2. Apply to UPMC online and complete HR screening
  3. Mail to UPMC Office of Advanced Practice Providers copies of the following: ACLS, CPR, and Pennsylvania Act 33, 34, and 73 clearances, official NP/PA school transcripts from school directly to UPMC Advanced Practice Provider Postgraduate Surgical Residency Program.

** Acceptance to residency program is contingent upon successful completion of the UPMC credentialing process and a pre-employment health screening.

Selection Criteria

Eligible applicants will meet the following requirements:

  • Available for an in-person interview.

Physician Assistant

  • PANCE certification (if applicable).
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
  • A current state PA license, certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required prior to start date.

Nurse Practitioner

  • BSN; MSN candidate is preferred.
  • A current state RN license and CRNP certification is required prior to start date.

Finances

  • Stipend available- roughly $70,000 per year, 22 days of PTO earned throughout the year, 7 paid holidays, and full benefits for resident and family.
