Program History / Description

The EMAPC fellowship was created by Morningstar Emergency Physicians of Team Health in 2013 for physician assistants and nurse practitioners in response to a need for improved utilization of advanced practice clinicians (APC) in the delivery of high quality, competent, cost-effective emergency medical care as well as a streamlined pathway to professional advancement.  The EMAPC fellowship is a 12 month, intense program that provides clinical and didactic training that parallels the current emergency physician residency program.  The curriculum is modeled from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACEOP), and the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) specific goals and educational objectives for emergency medicine (EM) residency programs.   The EMAPC fellowship maintains membership with the Association of Postgraduate Physician Assistant Programs (APPAP) and follows the standards set forth by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

Mission Statement

The mission of the EMAPC fellowship is to provide a post-graduate specialty training program for physician assistants and nurse practitioners in a dynamic environment that promotes excellence in emergency medicine patient care.  The intensive didactic and clinical training will prepare the APC to be a skilled partner in the delivery of quality, competent acute and emergency patient care.

Curriculum

Didactic

The EMAPC fellows will participate in 5 hours of weekly lectures along with the EM physician residents at Integris SWMC and will include topics specific to APC practice.  Stroke Grand Rounds is presented once monthly by attending neurologist. Grand Round Conference enlists EMAPC fellows to present interesting cases including a lecture of the differential, disease process identified and treatment rendered.  The fellow will also participate in the EM Residency Journal Club meeting the second Wednesday of each month. All fellows will be provided education/certification in Basic Arrhythmia, EKG interpretation, ACLS, PALS, ATLS, and the Chamberlain Emergency Skills Workshop.  Curriculum to be based from “Disease and Disorder List.” (see appendix A)

Clinical

EMAPC fellows will have the majority of their training in the emergency department at the Norman Regional Hospital (NRC) system which includes Norman Regional Hospital, the Healthplex, and Moore Medical Center (MMC) under the supervision of a board certified/ board eligible  (BE/BC) emergency physician as well as practicing APCs.  The fellow will work 15 shifts monthly including five “flow shifts” per month in the fast-track at MMC treating less acute patients with higher patient volumes under the supervision of a BE/BC emergency physician.  Additional rotations will be provided in orthopedics, radiology, anesthesia, trauma,  as well as pre-hospital care with EMS service.

The fellow will be instructed and supervised by a BC/BE physician or APC in all aspects of skills related to the performance of emergency medical procedures.  Procedure and patient logs are to be maintained by the fellow.  Core procedures and skills are listed in Appendix B.
