Total 10 required rotations plus one month each elective/vacation.
Montefiore Medical Center West Campus/Moses Division – SICU, Vascular Surgery, Acute Care Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, – all one month each.
Montefiore Medical Center East Campus – Jack D. Weiler Hospital – Acute Care/General Surgery (1 month)
Jacobi Medical Center – Trauma, SICU – one month each
Wakefield Campus (North Division) – Vascular (1 month)
Hutchinson Campus – ambulatory surgery (1 month)
Elective Month/Vacation Month – these two months are split two weeks elective/two weeks vacation twice each year.
Electives arranged by PA Resident – possibilities are: Orthopedics (Jacobi and/or Monte), Plastic Surgery, Breast Surgery, GU Surgery, CT Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Anesthesia, Interventional Radiology, GI Medicine/Endoscopy, repeat any prior clinical rotation in the scheduled curriculum.

Established in 1971, it is the first postgraduate PA training program in the nation. Program is dedicated to instruction of PAs in the surgical care of adult and pediatric patients presenting to the in-patient floors, emergency medicine department, critical care, out-patient office/clinics, ambulatory surgical, operating room, and trauma settings.
Didactic session begins third Monday of August and continues to 10/31 of the same year. The Clinical rotations start 11/1 and continue to 10/31 of the following year. This is a total of 14.5 months. Didactic session encompasses lectures by surgical, medical attending physicians, staff PAs, ancillary services personnel (legal, nursing, pharmacy, etc.) centered on surgical and medical topics that are needed for the best care/management of patients during the clinical settings. Also includes BCLS, ACLS, auditing ATOM course, suturing classes, laparoscopic skills training, weekly Surgical Grand Rounds and M&M conference and SCORE conference.
There are 9 required clinical rotations each one month long with a full month of paid vacation and one elective month. Vacation and elective may be split as two weeks each for two months. The required rotations are:
SICU – at Jacobi Medical Center – Level One Trauma Center
Trauma – at Jacobi Medical Center – Level One Trauma Center
SICU – at Montefiore Medical Center
Pediatric Surgery – at Montefiore Medical Center (CHAM)
Vascular Surgery – at Montefiore Medical Center Moses and Wakefield Campuses
CT surgery – at Montefiore Medical Center
Acute care Surgery – at Montefiore Medical Center
Weiler General Surg. – Jack D. Weiler Hospital (one month)
Ambulatory Surgery – at Montefiore Hutchinson Campus (one month)
Elective month is arranged by resident in discipline of interest – can be Plastic, GU, Ob-Gyn, Orthopedic, Endocrine, Neurologic, ENT or Breast Surgery or any surgically related field such as GI medicine, Interventional Radiology, Interventional Neuroradiology, Anesthesia, etc.

Application is available on-line at www. Montefiore.org under residency/fellowship training tab as well as through office. Components include written narrative, educational and work history, needed documentation (resume, undergraduate and PA transcripts, letters of recommendation from PA program Director, Clinical preceptor/employer, peer PA, clinical clerkship evaluations), military history, professional affiliations.
Applications are accepted for review starting as early as December of the year prior to desired entrance date and continually through June of the class year. Interviews are offered to qualified applicants once all materials are received.
An applicant’s acceptance into our program is based on the materials submitted, academic performance, clerkship evaluations, work history and the interview with the Medical and Program Directors. There is a dynamic weighted balance between academic performance, clinical evaluations, work history, recommendation letters and the interview. All these elements are examined collectively and through discussion applicants are selected who seem best suited to benefit from their Montefiore experience.
