Program Description and History

The EVMS (Eastern Virginia Medial School) Physician Assistant Fellowship in Emergency Medicine began in 2009 to educate and train highly motivated physician assistants in the challenging and diverse knowledge base and procedurals skills required for excellence in clinical practice in emergency medicine.

The Fellowship accepts 2 to 4 students per year and begins in the last week of June.  Graduates of this 12 month Fellowship Program will possess substantial skills, knowledge and competencies required in the field of emergency medicine.  In addition to 8 months of working in the Emergency Room setting, Fellows will have 1 month rotations thru subspecialties.  This program is ideal for the new graduate, the PA working in Emergency Medicine who is searching for more confidence in managing complex patient presentations and the PA working in another specialty who wants to transition into Emergency Medicine.

The Program consists of didactic and clinical education.  The didactic portion is in the form of weekly lectures, with one of the lecture days per month dedicated to procedural skills in the new state of the art Education and Research Building at EVMS, as well as monthly Journal Club.  The clinical portion consists of a total of 8 months of work in the Emergency Department as well as 1 month rotations in the Intensive Care Unit, Trauma, Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Ultrasound.  We may consider elective rotations in other subspecialties should the interest arise.  Certifications in BLS, ACLS, and ATLS are included.
