Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center:

Founded in 1893, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is a nonprofit academic health system that includes a 396-bed hospital with the area’s only Level 1 trauma center and the only air ambulance service; the Norris Cotton Cancer Center; the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock; and is affiliated with several hospitals in New Hampshire and Vermont. In partnership with the Audrey and Theodor Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and the White River Junction Veterans Administration Medical Center in White River Junction, VT, Dartmouth-Hitchcock trains nearly 400 residents and fellows annually and performs world-class research.

Our Program:

The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Postgraduate Physician Assistant Otolaryngology Residency is an intensive 12-month advanced training program. The residents’ training will be comprised of parallel didactic and clinical curriculums, which will provide them with a solid foundation in the diagnosis and management of conditions common to the ear, nose and throat, as well as the outpatient, inpatient and surgical management.

Residents will have exposure to head and neck surgery related to benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck region, general and pediatric Otolaryngology including the evaluation and management of common ear, nose and throat disorders in the adult and pediatric population, as well as Otology and Neuro-otology for the evaluation and management of hearing and balance disorders. Upon completion of the program, residents will be prepared to:

  • Triage, evaluate, treat and manage ear, nose and throat problems, and be an independent first assistant in the operating room.
  • Care for patients of all ages with medical and surgical disorders of the ears, the upper respiratory and upper alimentary systems and related structures, and the head and neck.
  • Carry out diagnostic evaluations of patients with otolaryngology disorders.
  • Carry out the surgical and nonsurgical management of otolaryngologic disorders, including rehabilitation and appropriate referrals.

The goal of the program is to help residents grow and develop the surgical, medical, and critical thinking skills required to build a successful career as a Physician Assistant in Otolaryngology.

Curriculum Outline:

Didactic: The didactic curriculum will include a biweekly two-hour educational session with the faculty, residents, medical students and any rotating PA students; weekly Head and Neck Multi-disciplinary Tumor Board meetings; a monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference; and monthly Journal Club. Residents will also participate in quarterly internal and visiting grand rounds speakers and inpatient rounds with attending physicians throughout the year.

Clinical: The clinical curriculum is integrated within the didactic curriculum with exposure to inpatient and emergency room consults, inpatient and outpatient management, and the operating room. Physician Assistant Residents will perform daily rounds, obtain focused patient histories, present patients, perform head and neck physical exams, order appropriate diagnostic studies, interpret radiographic studies, formulate differential diagnosis, apply appropriate pharmacotherapy, make referrals for surgery or other consultations, implement the plan of care, give educational presentations, and manage inpatients with otolaryngological disorders and post-operative recovery from head and neck surgery.

Financial Information:

Annual Stipend: $70,000

Benefits: PA Residents are eligible for full and comprehensive benefits provided by D-H.

Equipment: The residency program provides educational materials including protective loupes, lab coats, textbooks, a computer, handouts and internet access while in a D-H facility.

Travel: Interview related expenses are the responsibility of each candidate.

Housing: Housing and relocation are the responsibility of each PA resident.

Category 1 CME is available by participating in and attending lectures, conferences, journal clubs, and grand rounds.

Program Admission Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited Master’s Degree Physician Assistant Program
  • Eligible to pass (or have passed) the NCCPA certification (must have NCCPA certification by matriculation date)
  • Must obtain a Physician Assistant license in the state of New Hampshire once admitted to the program
  • Personal Interview
  • Candidates invited to participate in on-campus interviews will be asked to complete the formal D-H online application process
  • A criminal background check and a urine drug screen will be performed as a part of the pre-employment requirements for final selected candidates
  • Any offer of residency is contingent on final candidates successfully completing the standard D-H pre-employment checks and clinical credentialing process prior to matriculation
